a presentation by James Morgan, November 24, 2014

For about one hundred years mathematicians have been examining, either formally or informally, the concept of fractals. In the recent past, fractals have become increasingly important in a multiplicity of settings including computer graphics, environmental modeling, biology, art, and music. Workshop participants spent an afternoon learning about representations of fractals in nature, music, and art. James also showed how to create fractals with software called IFS. Fractals are an excellent way to introduce a variety of mathematical ideas such that students are drawn into the discussion and motivated to participate.
